If you're renovating or constructing a roof, you've probably noticed two terms over and over: soffit and fascia.

What is soffit and fascia? Read on to find out more!

What Is Soffit and Fascia? Basic Definitions

The term "soffit," in a broad, sense, refers to the underside of any structural element. However, it is most commonly used to describe the material that covers the underside of a roof overhang.

The more modern soffit you'll find can be found in vinyl or aluminum, although it is still manufactured in wood. The soffit should cover the entire area from the edge of an exterior wall to the fascia. If there are any gaps, you may end up with some unwelcome house guests like nesting squirrels and birds.

The term "fascia" refers to the board that is installed along the edge of your roof. Its purpose is to give your roof a more even, finished look while also protecting the edges from damage. Plus, fascia is the roofing component that exterior pieces like gutters are attached to.

Fascia is typically made of wood, although there are varieties made from durable plastic or aluminum. You may find the plastic or aluminum varieties in several colors.

Importance of Soffit and Fascia

Soffit is used to cover exposed eaves beneath your shingles and other roofing elements. The fascia, as we mentioned earlier, acts as both a barrier and a mounting block for other elements.

Without these two components, your roof has a higher chance of developing water damage. The problem, here, is that any water getting under your roofing along the edges or eaves can cause damage inside your house, increasing the possibility of mold growth. Not only is mold destructive to your house's structure but it also poses several health threats.

These two components are fairly vulnerable when it comes to wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. If either your soffits or fascia becomes damaged, it is important to repair or replace it right away.

What Is the Average Cost of Soffit and Fascia?

It's not easy to guess exactly how much soffit and fascia will cost because there are tons of factors that will affect this number. The material and quality will vary greatly from one brand to another, and this isn't where you want to cut costs. In addition, your total bill will, of course, depend on how large of an area you are covering.
